At the symposium “Securing of dams, dykes and weirs” of the institute for geotechnical engineering at the University of Siegen, Reinhold Neisser reported about flood control in practice.

Reinhold Neisser presented the construction of a flood control channel near Rees on the Lower Rhine in the district of Kleve as one of the most challenging projects of technical flood control.

For the building project 50 million euros are provided by the waterways and shipping administration of the Federal Government until 2015. The federal state North Rhine-Westphalia participates with further 5 million euros in this building project which is distinguished by the PIANC (The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure).

The flood control channel is meant to contribute to the relief of the main stream of the Rhine during flood events and the general reduction of flow velocity.

Additionally the flood control channel is meant to fulfill the following tasks:
•             Stabilization of the fairway conditions
•             Further drain options for the Rhine
•             Reduction of erosion trends
•             Decrease of the seepage pressure on the city wall
•             Improvement of the flood situation for the upper Rhine bordering

Thus the flood control channel takes the function of a bypass for the main stream of the Rhine. It lowers the water level of the Rhine that results in a lower flow rate of the main stream. This again reduces bed erosion.

The flood control channel has a total length of three kilometers and is between 120 and 180 meters wide depending on the water-level.

The area of the flood control channel is both a nature reserve and under landscape conservation. The nature reserve comprises two FFH-areas and is part of the EU- bird reservoir as well as the wetland of international importance “Unterer Niederrhein”.

The International Geotextile GmbH delivered iGGgab river matresses, the iGGmat Vmax P550 erosion control blanket as well as iGGfix mounting materials.
